Tokayev in Berlin: German business expects 37 projects worth €1.8 billion, Merz this afternoon

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev arrived in Germany on Monday evening at Frank-Walter Steinmeier's invitation, Akorda said. The German-Kazakh Business Forum opens on Tuesday at the Haus der Deutschen Wirtschaft in Berlin, where the Ost-Ausschuss expects 37 bilateral projects worth €1.8 billion to be signed, and Chancellor Friedrich Merz receives him at the chancellery in the afternoon to talk energy and raw materials.

The programme, as Akorda gave it on Monday evening, runs through Berlin and Munich: talks with the federal president and the chancellor, a business forum in Berlin, a technology business forum in Munich, and meetings with the heads of German companies, financial institutions, universities and research institutes. Akorda gave no end date for the visit and no list of documents.

The Ost-Ausschuss der Deutschen Wirtschaft, the German business association for eastern markets, gave the trade figures behind the forum on Monday. Trade between the two countries was about €8 billion in 2025, €5.3 billion of it German imports from Kazakhstan and €2.7 billion German exports. Kazakhstan comes to Berlin as Germany's largest trading partner in Central Asia by a wide margin.

Trade grew by more than 25% year on year in the first half of 2026, and Kazakhstan accounts for about 80% of Germany's trade with Central Asia, the association said. Tokayev and Steinmeier speak at the forum, with Michael Harms of the Ost-Ausschuss and Peter Adrian of the chambers of industry and commerce.

The chancellery's notice for Tuesday says Merz receives Tokayev in the afternoon for a one-to-one on "the expansion of the bilateral energy and raw materials partnership", regional cooperation and international security policy, with a joint press conference to follow.

One paper was on the table before the forum opened, and it is a draft. Kazakhstan's water resources ministry and the German Water Partnership, an association of more than 300 companies, are working on a joint water hub for technology exchange, digital solutions and pilot projects, Kazinform reported at 08:14 Astana time on Tuesday: the ministry's analytical centre has drafted the concept and sent it to the association for approval, and the proposal was presented at a round table on the water partnership in Berlin.

The two sides signed a strategic partnership agreement on water management in October 2025. Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov also met Heike Peitsch, Germany's ambassador in Kazakhstan, Kazinform said; its report does not say where.

Kazakhstan presents itself to Berlin as a reliable source of raw materials and energy and a future exporter of green hydrogen, in the Ost-Ausschuss's framing of the forum. The list of the 37 projects, their signatories and what Merz and Tokayev say at the press conference will be known on Tuesday afternoon.
