Uzbekistan auctions 2,500 river sites for small hydropower

Tashkent has identified about 3,000 potential sites for small and micro hydropower stations and put more than 2,500 of them up for auction, the first deputy energy minister said, a day after the president ordered the segment scaled up.

Umid Mamadaminov gave the figures to the Uzbekistan 24 channel, Gazeta.uz reported on Thursday. Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a dedicated meeting on small hydropower on 19 August and instructed that generation from the segment be raised. Each auctioned project, per Mamadaminov, is to be studied further for technical feasibility.

The grid's gap is being worked from both ends at once.

Regulatory follow-through targets a loophole. Officials want to end the practice of taking land allocated for a hydropower station without building one, and the auction push follows a simplification of rules for micro stations reported a day earlier.

The scale is small and the week is telling. Days after Mirziyoyev spoke of preparations for a second nuclear station, his ministry is selling rivers by the lot. The grid's gap is being worked from both ends at once.
