Tajikistan’s industry grows 13.8% in 8 months to 45.37 billion somoni and its trade 37.2%, with imports running at 3.7 times exports

Industrial output in Tajikistan reached 45.37 billion somoni in January to August, 13.8% more than a year earlier, the Statistics Agency under the President reported on Thursday through Avesta: processing up 23%, electricity, gas and steam up 19.3%, water and waste up 17.2%. Foreign trade rose 37.2% to $9.23 billion, exports of $1.97 billion against imports of $7.26 billion; freight carried rose 15.2% to 113.7 million tonnes; retail trade grew 30.6% and the services of restaurants, cafes and canteens 61.2%.

Horizontal bar chart of Tajikistan's January to August 2026 growth rates by sector, restaurant services at 61.2 the longest bar and industry's 13.8 in amber.

Imports ran at 3.7 times exports in the 8 months. The gap of $5.29 billion is the size of what the country buys with money that is not export revenue, and the EBRD reads it as a remittance economy: it has Tajikistan at 7.9% for 2026 on remittances and an export surge it measured on its own series, against the ADB’s 7.0%. Industry’s 13.8% is the lowest of the day’s growth lines and the restaurants’ 61.2% the highest.

On 22 September the Asian Development Bank approved a $43.27 million grant package for the Integrated Regional Health Security and Primary Healthcare Services Project: $28 million from its Asian Development Fund, $10.27 million from the Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response Trust Fund, $3 million from the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific and $2 million from the Green Climate Fund, for disease monitoring at the major border crossings, public health laboratories and 5 integrated service centres in rural, remote and border areas.

Imports ran at 3.7 times exports in the 8 months.

The industrial count comes with the anniversary’s construction count. In Khujand on Wednesday, wrapping his Sughd tour, President Rahmon put the region’s new industrial enterprises of the last 5 years at 781, with more than 8,000 jobs, and the facilities built or rebuilt in the region ahead of the 35th anniversary of independence at 15,400, Caravan-Info reported on Thursday morning. The statistics agency’s series and the president’s are 2 series, and both are the state’s.
