Tajikistan asks for its first UN Security Council seat, for 2028 to 2029

Foreign minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin told the General Assembly on Saturday that Tajikistan has put its name forward as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for 2028 to 2029, the first candidacy in its history, Asia-Plus reported on Monday afternoon. The vote comes in June 2027, when Kyrgyzstan will be six months into the first Central Asian seat since Kazakhstan’s in 2017 to 2018.

A small grey pebble rests at the edge of a vast curved table in an empty round chamber, one amber cushion on the nearest chair.

Conflicts multiply, trust vanishes and uncertainty has become part of daily life, the minister opened, and peace has to be built, kept and handed on. For the first time in its history, he said, Tajikistan has put forward its candidacy as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for 2028 to 2029; to strengthen the UN, greater responsibility is needed, and Tajikistan is ready for it. A seat on the Council, he said, is a responsibility for upholding the UN Charter, and his priorities if elected are peace, water, the fight against terrorism and international cooperation on artificial intelligence.

The queue behind him is the region’s. Kyrgyzstan was elected on 3 June by 142 votes to 49 over the Philippines for 2027 to 2028, its first seat; Uzbekistan has filed for 2035 to 2036 and Mongolia for 2048 to 2049. If Tajikistan takes the Asia-Pacific seat that comes up a year after Kyrgyzstan’s, two Central Asian states will sit on the Council through 2028.

For the first time in its history, he said, Tajikistan has put forward its candidacy as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for 2028 to 2029; to strengthen the UN, greater responsibility is needed, and Tajikistan is ready for it.

The rest of the speech was Dushanbe’s calendar. The International Decade for Strengthening Peace, 2027 to 2036, opens in June 2027 with a conference in Dushanbe; the UN Water Conference meets in Abu Dhabi in December; in 2028 Dushanbe hosts the closing conference of the Water for Sustainable Development decade. On Gaza he called for a lasting ceasefire and unimpeded aid, and on Afghanistan for continued support to its people and constructive regional cooperation.
