Mirziyoyev starts a 1.5 GW wind farm with ACWA in Karakalpakstan and prices 6 AI projects at $8 billion with no investor named

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's 2-day trip to Karakalpakstan, which took in a meeting in Nukus on Saturday 19 September, produced 58 projects that his press service values at $7.6 billion. The largest named project is Saudi-built wind power. Its largest unnamed ones are data centres.

The press service's count, carried by Forbes Kazakhstan on Sunday: 11 projects worth $592 million put into operation and construction started on 47 worth $7 billion.

The largest named item is in Kungrad district, where work began on a 1.5 GW wind plant and its connection to the grid, a $2.6 billion project with Saudi Arabia's ACWA. It comes with 1,500 km of high-voltage lines, 3 new 500 kV substations and 2 modernised ones.

Chinese companies, unnamed, are partners in projects โ€œto produce digital currencyโ€ and to build data centres for artificial intelligence, worth almost $2.3 billion in all.

A special zone for AI and data centres is to take 6 projects worth $8 billion, Spot and Gazeta.uz reported from the Nukus meeting. Neither report names an investor. The government has until 1 October to draft a 5-year programme to give the sites a stable 1 GW of power, and exports of AI and cloud services are to reach $600 million a year by the end of 2029.

The jobs target attached is 1,500 well-paid posts over 3 years in Nukus, Kungrad, Karauzyak and Takhiatash. A fast train between Tashkent and Nukus is promised from March 2027, cutting the journey from 16 hours to 7.

Green generation is 23% of Karakalpakstan's output now and is to reach 76% by 2030, the press service said.

Neither report names an investor.

The sum the announcements leave open is electrical. A steady 1 GW for the data centres equals two-thirds of the wind farm's nameplate capacity, and the country that is to supply it cut its 2030 gas production target from 62 to 48.5 billion cubic metres in February. Mirziyoyev dismissed his energy minister on 27 July; Gazeta.uz's report at the time listed recurring power cuts and winter gas shortages among the ministry's standing problems.
