Kyrgyzstan takes the TurkPA chair from Kazakhstan with a mallet and a list of priorities

Aibek Dadebai, chairman of Kazakhstan’s Kurultai, handed the symbolic mallet of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic States to Jogorku Kenesh speaker Marlen Mamataliev in Bishkek on Tuesday. The assembly’s 15th plenary session runs there on 19 and 20 October with the speakers of Azerbaijan and Turkey in the hall.

The ceremony took place in the Yrys-Ordo congress hall during the sitting of the Council of the Assembly, the Jogorku Kenesh press service said in 24.kg’s report at 11:30 Bishkek time. After the handover the sitting continued under Mamataliev, who set out Kyrgyzstan’s programme for its term.

“Today TurkPA faces new tasks,” he said. “Cooperation between our countries should not only reflect our historical and cultural community but bring concrete results capable of improving the daily lives of citizens,” Mamataliev said. His list ran to legislation on digital transformation and artificial intelligence, transport and economic links, a wider role for young parliamentarians, and energy and food security beside education, science and culture.

Countries need to develop joint projects and transport corridors more actively amid geopolitical and economic change, he said, and Kyrgyzstan intends to widen the work of the assembly’s standing commissions and of its groups of young and women parliamentarians. Both groups held their fifth meetings in Bishkek on Monday, by the assembly’s own site.

“Cooperation between our countries should not only reflect our historical and cultural community but bring concrete results capable of improving the daily lives of citizens,” Mamataliev said.

Sahiba Gafarova, chair of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, Dadebai and Numan Kurtulmuş, speaker of Turkey’s Grand National Assembly, took part in the council, 24.kg reported, and the participants discussed the agenda of the 15th plenary session. The assembly’s site announces the plenary for 19 and 20 October in Bishkek, and no declaration had been published on it by 09:40 Moscow time.
