Uzbekistan's prices fell in July, and its petrol rose 21.7% in a year

Consumer prices in Uzbekistan fell 0.1% in July as the vegetable season arrived. Petrol rose 4.8% in the month and 21.7% over the year.

The National Statistics Committee published the figures on Thursday. Annual inflation held at 6.4%, the same reading as June. Prices are up 3.2% since January.

Food fell 0.9% in the month and took 0.38 percentage points off the index by itself. Eggplants lost 42.8%, peppers 39.4%, tomatoes 24%. Eggs fell 5.0% in the month and sit 15% above last year.

Non-food goods rose 0.3% and services 0.5%, with public transport in Tashkent region up 15%, rice up 5.9%, and beef up 0.6% in the month and 18.8% over the year.

β€œPropane is 34.6% dearer than a year ago. Petrol is 21.7% dearer. The tomatoes came in on time.”

Annual inflation reads highest in Tashkent at 6.9% and lowest in Sirdarya region at 5.4%.

The central bank held its policy rate at 14% on 29 July and kept a year-end forecast of about 6.5%, against a 5% target. July's reading sits just under that forecast, with the fuel line in the basket still moving.
