Ulaanbaatar counts 4,127 delegates, and rations its traffic

Registration for the UN desertification conference COP17 reached 4,127 delegates, the state agency MONTSAME reported on 29 July, against the more than 2,000 it reported days earlier. The capital will run even-odd licence-plate restrictions from 15 August to 12 September.

The logistics are landing in layers: a dedicated media centre opened this week, 745 side-event requests are in, and 73 kindergartens and 60 schools will adjust their schedules for the conference dates of 17 to 28 August. The host country brings its own exhibit: 76.8% of Mongolian territory is affected by desertification, by the agency’s own count.
