Two months for Kocharyan, ruled around a hospital bed

Armenia's Anti-Corruption Court granted the investigator's motion in full on Thursday morning: Robert Kocharyan, the country's second president, goes into detention for 2 months. The ruling landed while he lay in a hospital ward.

The hearing spanned the night. Doctors ordered Kocharyan moved to hospital during the session, and the court continued without him. "Doctors considered it right that he be in the hospital, not in the courtroom," his younger son Levon said.

Judge Sargis Dadoyan presided. The Anti-Corruption Committee announced the outcome in a single sentence: the court "fully granted the investigator's motion."

Prosecutors set out the scale of the case on Tuesday. It runs to 9 episodes, 3 of abuse of office, 2 of bribe-taking in especially large amounts and 4 of laundering, with transfers to his son's name across 2001 to 2019 put at 144 billion drams, about $395 million, alongside $309 million, โ‚ฌ77 million and 18 million rubles under examination.

That son, Sedrak Kocharyan, was ordered held for 2 months on Wednesday. The father's detention is his third since 2018. He underwent heart stent surgery about two weeks before the arrest, Azatutyun reported.

Most of the defendant list stays behind initials. The prosecutor's founding statement names only Kocharyan in full and identifies nine other people by initial letters; beyond the two Kocharyans, only Serzh Sargsyan's charging in the same case has been separately confirmed on the record.

The political frame was set in parliament on Monday, when Pashinyan told the opposition benches: "You will have to return everything, piece by piece."
