Beijing puts Xi's Bishkek dates in writing

China's foreign ministry confirmed on Wednesday that Xi Jinping will attend the SCO summit in Bishkek and stay for a state visit to Kyrgyzstan. The Kyrgyz side announced him 37 days ago.

Beijing puts Xi's Bishkek dates in writing

The announcement, posted at 15:00 Beijing time, gives the span: from 30 August to 3 September, Xi attends the 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek and pays state visits to Kyrgyzstan and Egypt, at the invitations of presidents Sadyr Japarov and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. That range covers the whole trip; the SCO Secretariat's date for the heads-of-state council is 1 September.

Beijing's own paper trail began on Wednesday.

At the same day's briefing, spokesman Lin Jian reached for the anniversary: 25 years of the organisation, views to be exchanged on deepening cooperation. On Kyrgyzstan he offered 34 years of diplomatic relations, mountain-linked neighbours, and a meeting with Japarov on, as the transcript has it, bilateral relations and key cooperation areas.

Bishkek has been building the stage for weeks. Manas airport goes onto a special regime from 31 August, the Nomad Games open the same day, and this week a 4,050-meter peak in Ala-Archa was renamed for the organisation. Beijing's own paper trail began on Wednesday.

The other marquee guests still lack their governments' signatures. Pakistani papers have Shehbaz Sharif arriving 31 August, sourced to unnamed officials; Delhi's record remains Jaishankar's remark in Moscow that Modi looks forward to meeting Putin at the summit. No release from either capital surfaced in the desk's checks on Wednesday.

For Kyrgyzstan the confirmation upgrades a summit into a bilateral. What lands on the state-visit table, from the CKU railway's financing to the fuel contracts Bishkek signed in Urumqi this month, is the part the announcement leaves open.
