A Bishkek court jails Kadyr Atambayev for four years over a plot to seize power

The Pervomaisky district court of Bishkek convicted Kadyrbek Atambayev, the former president’s son known as Kadyr, of violent seizure of power under article 326 of the Criminal Code on Thursday and gave him four years with confiscation, the Bishkek outlet Economist.kg reported from the court’s registry. Social Democrats leader Temirlan Sultanbekov received four years, merged with his 2025 vote-buying sentence into seven, and former deputy Kubanychbek Kadyrov was acquitted.

A heavy courtroom door ajar onto an empty wooden bench and two chairs, lit by an amber lamp beyond it.

Judge Iskander Sargaldakov read the verdict after a trial held behind closed doors since 14 July, according to Economist.kg and Open.kg. Sultanbekov, Atambayev and Kadyrov stood accused of violent seizure of power and the other three defendants of mass disorder, by Open.kg’s account of the charges, and the registry confirmed article 326 for Atambayev. Sultanbekov serves his seven years in a general-regime colony with confiscation of property, Abdurakhim Abdrakhmanov, already convicted of fraud by the Alamedin district court, received eight years, Ermek Ermatov was placed under probation supervision instead of prison after his charge was reclassified and walked out of the courtroom, and Serikbai Kabylanbek, a citizen of Kazakhstan, received one year and nine months, was freed with his detention counted as time served and is to be deported.

Four years for the son of a president, seven for a party leader, and an acquittal for a former deputy. Prosecutors had asked for seven and a half to nine and a half years for the six, with seven and a half for Atambayev, by both outlets.

Everything began with the detentions of 22 and 23 November 2025, shortly before the early elections to the Jogorku Kenesh, when the interior ministry reported ten people held, among them Sultanbekov, Atambayev, Ermatov, the former deputies Kadyrov and Shailoobek Atazov, the businessman Urmat Baryktabasov and Damir Musakeev, once head of Almazbek Atambayev’s guard, Economist.kg recounts. Six of the ten stood trial in this case, and neither outlet says where the cases of Atazov, Baryktabasov and Musakeev stand. Investigators alleged that the group planned rallies after the vote, first in the south and then in Bishkek, with supporters drawn from criminal groups and sports clubs, and allowed for the seizure of administrative buildings, television channels and security installations, and the police said they seized weapons, ammunition and grenades in searches, with a video of a conversation between Sultanbekov and an unknown person, posted online, part of the case file.

Four years for the son of a president, seven for a party leader, and an acquittal for a former deputy.

What the court found each man did is not in either report, and the article behind the mass-disorder count is printed by neither outlet. Sultanbekov called the case politically motivated before the reading, Open.kg reported at 13:52, and Atambayev’s statement on the sentence and the case file followed at 15:12.

The son of a president who was himself sentenced in 2020 begins four years, the Social Democrats’ leader seven, the one former deputy among the six walks free, and the verdict is open to appeal.
