Urgench brings in Incheon to more than quadruple its airport

Shavkat Mirziyoyev used a Monday stop in Khorezm to unveil a $264 million public-private partnership with Incheon International Airport Corporation that is set to lift Urgench airport's capacity from 300 to 1,300 passengers an hour.

The first stage builds parking for 18 aircraft and a new taxiway and brings the field up to wide-body service, with Boeing 747s and Airbus A350s named as the reference types. About 10 airlines fly Urgench today.

The structure is a public-private partnership with one of Asia’s largest hub operators. Neither the split between state money and Incheon’s nor a completion date has been published in the accounts read.

The expansion lands in a growing market. Uzbek jet-fuel demand for the second half of the year is projected 27% higher, enough that buyers have gone to Georgia and Iraq for supply, and Khorezm anchors one of the country’s main tourism corridors.
