Putin, Aliyev and Pezeshkian hold the first three-way summit since 2017 at Avaza

Vladimir Putin, Ilham Aliyev and Masoud Pezeshkian held a trilateral meeting after the Caspian Ecological Summit on Friday, Dmitry Peskov confirmed to Interfax, the first sitting of the Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran format since Tehran in November 2017. APA’s correspondent reported the North-South transport corridor as the main topic, Aliyev then received Pezeshkian separately, and Putin boarded his plane at Turkmenbashi after two full-format bilaterals in two days.

Peskov’s confirmation came at 13:58 Moscow time, in one sentence: yes, such a meeting took place at the end of the ecological summit. APA’s correspondent at Avaza had reported the start at 13:59 Baku time with the North-South transport corridor as the main subject, and the Kremlin’s two Friday posts cover the CIS council and the ecological summit.

The format last met on 1 November 2017 in Tehran, after a first summit in Baku in the autumn of 2016, Interfax recalled, and a Moscow meeting planned for 2018, moved to 2019 and then postponed on technical grounds never happened. Nine years without a sitting ended on the sidelines at Avaza.

The Tehran summit of 2017 produced a joint statement on energy and the North-South corridor and a call to build the Rasht to Astara railway, the missing link on Iran’s Caspian coast, and Putin spoke there of an energy bridge joining the three countries’ grids, by the agency’s account. Aliyev received Pezeshkian separately after the trilateral, APA reported at 14:35 Baku time, and Pashinyan had met the Iranian president in the morning, with upcoming reciprocal high-level visits and Iranian companies in Armenia’s strategic projects on the readout from the prime minister’s office.

Aliyev also met Putin and Berdimuhamedov informally on the sidelines of the CIS council, Report.az’s correspondent wrote at 12:48, and the Russian and Azerbaijani presidents left the Caspian hall together, continuing on their feet, by Interfax at 13:17. Pezeshkian’s own contribution to the day was a proposal at the council for a CIS plus Iran format for dialogue on energy, trade, mining, water and the environment.

Putin boarded the Rossiya special flight at Turkmenbashi at about 13:56 Moscow time after two summits and two full-format bilaterals in two days, with Berdimuhamedov and with Pezeshkian on Thursday, and many short contacts on his feet, Interfax wrote. The trilateral is the only new format the visit produced, and its readout so far is Peskov’s one sentence and APA’s one topic.
