A cable starts across the Caspian floor

Laying of the Kazakhstan-Azerbaijan fibre-optic cable began on Friday from Baku toward Aktau, Kazakhstan’s digital development ministry said, with 15 to 20 days of marine work ahead and commissioning promised by the end of the year.

The armored line is designed for about 400 terabits of capacity, on the ministry’s figures, and is routed around military and anchorage zones. The cable was made and tested in China; 600 tonnes of it crossed from the port of Kuryk to Baku, and a vessel of 20,000 tonnes with a crew of 70 is doing the laying. Both cable ends have been connected and tested on board.

The project gives the Middle Corridor a data layer in the same season its freight grows; Georgian ports moved 22% more cargo in the first half of the year.
